DROP THE BILL

4 Mar

Before the Coalition Government was elected in May 2010, David Cameron pledged that there would be no top down reorganisation of the NHS. The is pledge now lies in tatters after the biggest shake-up in the history of the NHS. Many of the groups representing healthcare professionals, such as the BMA, have raised huge concerns over Andrew Lansley’s plans. Sadly, despite the very vocal opposition from both patients and health workers in the NHS, the health secretary and David Cameron refuses to listen.

The NHS has a particular place in the hearts of Urmston people as Trafford General is the birthplace of the NHS. Andy Burnham, the Labour Shadow Health Minister has been fighting hard to oppose the new bill going through Parliament and has been leading the Drop The Bill campaign. He was recently in Urmston as part of his campaigning. Cath Hynes, the local Labour candidate in May’s local elections joined him at the Drop The Bill streetstall outside Urmston library. Andy Burnham told local residents and media “The NHS should be above politics. It belongs to all of us”

Cath Hynes said “I’ve talked  with so many residents, many of whom have worked in the Health Service, and they all think the Government’s proposals are bad for the NHS.If passed this Bill is likely to lead to increased waiting times, large percentages of hospital beds being ring fenced for private patients and a postcode lottery for care. Every person I have spoken to is against the Bill’.

Catherine urges people to sign the online petition saying ‘If people are prepared to fight for the NHS I believe it is not too late to get the Government to drop this terrible bill’.

SUCCESS IN ABBOTSFIELD PARK

15 Feb

UNDER 5s GET NEW PLAY AREA THANKS TO CATH

Catherine scored a success with the council recently after listening to local residents in Abbotsfield Park. Whilst visiting the local park the Labour team spoke to a number of the parents and heard a lot of complaints over the dilapidated state of the under-5s play area.

Having listened to the views of local residents, Catherine got in touch with the relevant council officer. The office recently informed her that, following her emails and telephone calls, the under 5s area is to be completely revamped over the coming weeks. The officer has agreed to keep her up to date.

ROSENHEATH ROAD

15 Feb

 PARKING

Your local Labour representative, Cath Hynes, recently visited Rosenheath Road and heard that residents were becoming concerned about the amount of non-residents using the area for parking, possibly due to the increasing congregation at English St. Martyrs. Obviously it’s great to see a community facility like the church enjoying some success. However, Cath still felt it important to represent the views of local residents, and so went for a chat with Father Michael Jones.

He reassured Cath that, as the parish priest and a resident of Rodenheath Road, he is very aware of the parking problems. He assured her that the congregation are reminded regularly to be mindful of the residents and to park away from the road. Father Michael also said that building works have begun on a new Junior School block and eventually, when funds allow, the old building will be demolished. When this happens the site will be turned into a car park for the Church.

He went on to reiterate the very serious concern of other residents regarding speeding of motorists using Roseneath as a cut through. He is extremely worried that there is an accident waiting to happen. The Labour team are, consequently, investigating the possibility of traffic calming measures and signage which directs motorists to the car parks in Urmston. We’ll let you know the outcome of these investigations as soon as we have news.

Catherine has since written to the local residents too, with regard to these issues.

If there are any other issues which you feel Cath can help you with, please do not hesitate to contact her on 747 9677 or email at catherine dot hynes at traffordlabour.org.uk.

JOBS FOR YOU

28 Nov

This Saturday, as part of Labour’s drive to deliver their message on jobs, a street stall was set up outside Sainsbury’s in Urmston town centre. Catherine Hynes, the Labour candidate for this year’s local elections, was one of the people on the stall and thought the response had been fantastic. “We were here to publicise the 5 point plan for jobs and there was loads of interest. No-one was saying that the Governement has been doing a good job. Normally we expect a few people disagreeing with us, but that didn’t happen at all on the day.Whilst we were there a 90 year old woman came and chatted to us, saying that she never though that it could be as bad as it is now and that she’s glad she’s out of it all. There did seem to be a lot of anger towards the banks and their chief executives, who are perceived to be taking far too much money in bonuses, whilst the rest of us pay the price.” So, a big thank you to all those that took the time to come and talk with us. It’s great to hear what you have to say…
